Empowering the next generation of mental health professionals, leaders and changemakers. 🌱
Every professional journey starts somewhere. At the Somali Mental Health Network, we believe that your background, identity or connections should never determine how far you can go.
Our Student & Early Careers Strand is dedicated to supporting aspiring and emerging professionals to explore career pathways, build confidence, develop meaningful connections and find their place within the mental health sector.
We recognise that navigating education, training and professional opportunities can feel overwhelming, particularly for those from underrepresented communities. That's why we're creating a space where knowledge is shared, experiences are valued and the next generation can thrive.
Career Pathways & Masterclasses
Learn directly from experienced professionals through interactive masterclasses exploring psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, mental health services, research and other career pathways. Discover what different roles involve, how to access training and what it takes to progress.
Mentorship & Professional Connections
Connect with professionals who understand the journey. We're developing opportunities for mentorship, guidance and peer support to help students and early-career professionals navigate their next steps with greater confidence.
Learning, Leadership & Development
Beyond qualifications, we want to nurture confident, compassionate leaders. Through collaborative projects, community initiatives and learning opportunities, members can develop practical skills, share ideas and contribute to meaningful change.
A Community That Understands
Find belonging in a network that celebrates your cultural identity, lived experiences and professional aspirations. Connect with others who share your ambitions, exchange knowledge and grow together.
Whether you're a university student, recent graduate, trainee, aspiring practitioner or someone exploring a new career in mental health, this space is for you.
You don't need to have your entire career figured out. All you need is curiosity, a willingness to learn and a desire to make a difference.
Our vision is to create a sustainable student and early-careers community where aspiring professionals are not only supported to enter the sector but empowered to become the mentors, researchers, practitioners and leaders of tomorrow.
We want to help build a future where Somali and other underrepresented voices are visible, valued and represented at every level of mental health care.

The SMHN Student & Early Careers Strand is for students, graduates, trainees, career changers and early-career professionals who are exploring or developing a career within mental health, psychology, counselling, psychotherapy, research, healthcare and related professions.
You do not need to have your career pathway figured out before joining. This strand is designed to give you space to explore different professions, learn directly from people working in the field, ask questions and understand the practical steps that can help you progress.
Through our masterclasses, networking opportunities, professional development sessions and future student projects, we aim to help emerging professionals build knowledge, confidence, connections and professional identity.
The strand is rooted in the Somali Mental Health Network's commitment to improving representation and creating more culturally responsive mental health systems. We particularly want Somali, Black, Muslim and other underrepresented students to feel that professional mental health spaces are accessible to them, while our student activities remain open to people from all backgrounds.
As the strand develops, students will also have opportunities to engage with the wider SMHN professional network through events, research, volunteering, leadership opportunities and collaborative projects.
You don't need to know exactly where you're going yet. This strand is here to help you understand what is possible - and how to get there.
